Bud, Not Buddy Quote 2/10/2012

Author’s Note: I am writing the essay to show you a quote that I thought was very important to the story “Bud, Not Buddy” by Christopher Paul Curtis.

The quote I chose was when Bud’s mom is talk to Bud and she says “Bud is your name and don’t you ever let anyone call you anything outside that especially not Buddy.”  Bud is a 12 year old African American boy. Bud lives in a foster home because his mom died when he was eight and his dad live in great rapids. The first half of the story mostly takes place in Flint, Michigan. This quote is really important to the story because it has to do with the title.

When Bud’s mom tells Bud that quote I thought it was important because it plays a big role in this book. I think this because whenever he meets someone he says “My name is Bud, Not Buddy.” Bud gets mad when people call him Buddy. Also when people see him they will say “Hey Bud, Not Buddy.”  While I was reading the story, I thought that was really mean to say because they would say it sarcastically.

Another quote is also when Bud’s mom is talking to Bud. When she says “When one door closes, another door opens.” This is not that much of an important quote because it doesn’t really have a lot of meaning to the story. I think this because it is of topic.

In conclusion the quote I thought was important was when Bud’s mom says to Bud “Bud is your name and don’t you ever let anyone call you anything outside that especially Buddy.” It is important because it has to do with the entire story.

Bud, Not Buddy Setting Speech By Kevin Hoffmann 2/6/2012

Author’s Note: I am writing this speech to tell you the setting for Bud, Not- Buddy.

How would you feel if you lived in an orphanage? Well in Bud, Not Buddy the main character, Bud lived in one. Bud is a young African American boy who lives in an orphanage. His mother died when he was eight and his dad lives somewhere else. Follow Bud on his adventure to find his dad.

There are a lot of settings in this story. The main setting so far is in Flint, Michigan in 1936. Bud doesn’t like it there that much but he is forced to stay there because he doesn’t have anyone to look after him.  If the setting changed, Bud would probably change too because he wouldn’t run away. If the setting changed the plot would also change because Bud wouldn’t run away.
