Authors Note: I am writing this essay to compare and contrast Tim Meeker from “My Brother Sam is dead” and Ponyboy Curtis from “The Outsiders”.
What would you do if you someone that was really close to you? Tim Meeker is an average 15 year old boy. While Ponyboy, is the opposite of an average 15 year old boy. Tim and Ponyboy may seem completely different, but they both show characteristics for fighting for their families.
To begin with Tim Meeker has looked up to his only brother Sam all his life. While Ponyboy Curtis, has looked up to his older brother Darry. Sam was brave and always knew what the right thing to do. He was part of a new American Revolutionary Army. Sam talks about defeating the British and becoming independent and free. But not everyone in town wants to be a part of this new army, because most of the people are still loyal supporters of the English King, especially Tim and Sam’s father. The war is raging and Tim knows he’ll have to make a choice. But how can he choose, when it , means fighting his father on one side and fighting his brother on the other?
How are Tim and Ponyboy different? Tim fights for what he believes in. While Ponyboy fights for the greasers. In addition Tim has a mother and a father. On the other hand Ponyboy’s mom and dad died in a car crash. This affects Tim because he shows that he has more respect and more discipline. This affects Ponyboy because you can tell he doesn’t have a lot of respect and very little discipline.
Equally important Tim and Ponyboy have some similarities. Both characters are dynamic characters. Tim is a dynamic character because he goes from fighting on the same side as his dad to fighting against his dad. Ponyboy is also a dynamic character because he changes when Johnny dies. He gets more aggressive and wants to fight more.
Another similarity is they both lose someone really close to them. Tim loses his Sam. Sam was Tim’s older brother and his role model. Ponyboy loses Johnny. Johnny was Ponyboy’s best friend and was the person that ran away with Ponyboy the night Darry hit him across the face.
Lastly both characters have a loving family. Tim has his mom, dad, and had his brother until he died. While Ponyboy, has the greasers as his family. This is important because without family and friends you don’t really have anything left because now you don’t have anyone to care for you, protect you, or talk to. For example if you’re addicted to drugs and you don’t have family or friends than your addiction will just get worse and worse because there would be nobody to tell you to stop and one day you could overdose and die. Also if you get hurt nobody’s there to call an ambulance. Furthermore always stay in touch with your family and friends because one day it will pay off.

Another example is that Tim has blood related family. Ponyboy has his two brothers which are blood related and the rest of the greasers which are not blood related. Lastly keep close with your family and friends. That was how you compare and contrast Tim Meeker from “My Brother Sam is dead” and Ponyboy Curtis from “The Outsiders”.
